Our winter Session is our main event of the year. It occurs annually between December 26 and December 31, and takes place inside the Legislature building. At this event, members participate in exciting debates, meaningful discussions, and challenging personal explorations. All resolutions that we debate are written by members, and everyone is able to write and move resolutions.
Anyone between the ages of 15 and 21 may attend Session. The TUXIS Parliament is a spiritual and non- denominational organization, and we welcome members from any and all religions or belief systems. You do not need to have attended any other events, or have any debate experience to attend Session.
What to Expect
The majority of our Session takes place inside the Legislative chamber. This is where members move resolutions about topics that they feel passionate about, which then get debated. The December Session is also where members debate and vote on bills that impact the operations of the Parliament, such as the budget and procedural changes. We follow the Westminster Parliamentary System, meaning that we have a government and opposition side, with a Speaker to moderate the debate. TUXIS is completely non-partisan and members are encouraged to speak based on how they feel about the topic.
When we go back to Concordia University, we organize a variety of activities that are meant to be fun, teach members about TUXIS and debate, and get members to explore different beliefs, perspectives, and experiences. Our Ministry of Programming encompasses three areas: Membership, Social Action, and Devotions. Membership activities are fun ways for TUXIS parliamentarians to get to know each other, and to unwind after a busy day of debate. Social action activities are intended to raise awareness about ways in-which people have faced and overcome hardship and adversity, and increase understanding about how we can make a difference in the world. Devotions activities are designed for members to explore the wide variety of faiths and beliefs that people hold, so that members can get an increased appreciation and tolerance of different lifestyles and cultures.
Engaging and Open Debate
TUXIS is home to members who come from many different backgrounds, and TUXIS enables them to express their unique ideas and perspectives in a safe and open environment. Members are free to speak when they want to, and they can take whatever position they feel is right for them. This helps instill critical thinking in our members, and fosters an environment of tolerance and respect.
Whether you want to strengthen your public speaking, get more engaged in politics, or develop your leadership skills, TUXIS is right for you. During session, we organize lessons on how to debate in the Legislative Chamber, and there are plenty of opportunities to practice during our sittings. Because of our unique Parliamentary structure, many politicians and bureaucrats have began their journey through politics in TUXIS. TUXIS also has many opportunities for members to challenge themselves in positions of leadership.
